What Is Effective Field Goal Percentage (eFG%)?

Effective Field Goal Percentage is an efficiency metric that adjusts for three-point shots being worth more than two-point shots. It treats a made three as more valuable than a made two when measuring how efficiently a player shoots the ball, instead of counting every field goal the same regardless of shot value.

Formula

eFG% = (FGM + 0.5 × FG3M) / FGA

FGM — Field goals made (2s and 3s combined)

FG3M — Three-pointers made

FGA — Field goal attempts (2s and 3s combined)

Worked Example

A player makes 10 field goals, including 3 three-pointers, on 20 field goal attempts.

eFG% = (10 + 0.5 × 3) / 20

eFG% = 11.5 / 20

eFG% = .575 (57.5%)
