Glossary / Rebound Percentage (REB%)

What Is Rebound Percentage (REB%)?

Rebound Percentage is the percentage of missed shots a player grabs while on the court. It estimates the share of all available rebounds, both offensive and defensive, that a player pulls down during the minutes they play.

Formula

REB% = 100 ×REB × (Tm MP / 5)MP × (Tm REB + Opp REB)
REBThe player's own total rebounds
MPMinutes played by the player
Tm MPThe team's total minutes over that same game or season
Tm REB, Opp REBTotal rebounds grabbed by the player's team and by the opponent, combined, while that player was on the floor
REB% = OREB% + DREB%
OREB%
DREB%

Roughly illustrative split, not a fixed ratio. Defensive rebounds are simply far more available per game than offensive ones league-wide, which is part of why DREB% usually outweighs OREB% within a player's total REB%.

Worked Example

A player grabs 9 rebounds in 30 minutes, in a game where their team and the opponent combine for 84 total rebounds over 240 team minutes.
REB% = 100 × (9 × 48) / (30 × 84)
REB% = 100 × 432 / 2520
REB% ≈ 17.1%

REB% FAQ

What is a good Rebound Percentage by position?

It depends on position. Minutes-weighted averages this season: PG 7.3%, SG 7.3%, SF 9.2%, PF 11.3%, C 16.5%. Anything above the average for a player's own position is a reasonable bar for "good."

Why do some undersized players still post a high REB%?

Certain players play outside the restricted area while others stay near the paint and grab more boards, which isn't directly correlated with height. Positioning, timing, and how far a player roams from the basket matter as much as size.

Does REB% separate offensive and defensive rebounding, or combine them?

REB% is the combined of the two, offensive rebound percentage and defensive rebound percentage together into one overall number.
