What Is Block Percentage (BLK%)?

Block Percentage is an estimate of the percentage of opponent two-point field goal attempts that a player blocks while they are on the court. It measures rim and interior shot deterrence relative to how many two-point shots the opponent actually put up during that player's minutes.

Formula

BLK% = 100 ×BLK × (Tm MP / 5)MP × (Opp FGA − Opp 3PA)
BLKThe player's own blocks
MPMinutes played by the player
Tm MPThe team's total minutes over that same game or season
Opp FGA − Opp 3PAThe opponent's two-point field goal attempts (all attempts minus three-point attempts) over that same span

Worked Example

A player has 3 blocks in 30 minutes, in a game where the opponent takes 55 two-point attempts and the team plays 240 total minutes.
BLK% = 100 × (3 × 48) / (30 × 55)
BLK% = 100 × 144 / 1650
BLK% ≈ 8.7%

Typical BLK% by Position

This is the most position-skewed of the defensive rate stats: centers block shots at more than 3x the rate of guards. Minutes-weighted averages, 2025-26 season, min. 20 GP.

BLK% FAQ

What is a good Block Percentage?

BLK% varies a lot by position. Minutes-weighted averages this season: C 3.84%, PF 2.23%, SF 1.52%, SG 1.16%, PG 1.09%. Anything above the average for a player's own position is a reasonable bar for good.

Why is BLK% so much higher for centers than guards?

Most shots come from inside the paint, and those are the ones that are actually blockable, compared to jump shots further out. Centers spend most of their time defending exactly that area of the floor.

Does BLK% capture all of a player's rim protection impact?

No, same limitations as STL%. There are a lot of factors that go into good rim defense, and biting hard for a block attempt can inflate BLK% while also making a player easier to score around.
